We are shocked by the news that the henchman of the most credible agency under the present administration had her motorcade attacked by gun-wielding hoodlums on Boxing Day on her way to her village in Anambra State.

Dora Akunyili is the scrupulous and hardworking Director-General of the result-yielding National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Quite understandably, the hoodlums were suspected to be assassins sponsored by disgruntled fake, adulterated and expired drugs and food dealers whose activities had been the focus of Dora Akunyili's unrelenting crusade. We thank God that she escaped.

Vanguard believes that the nation owes us a duty to ensure that Dora Akunyili lives and does not come to any harm. This woman has done so much to convince the world that Nigeria still has a few courageous and incorruptible elements within her boundaries.

But for her efforts, the once flourishing fake and expired drugs and food business through which many Nigerians had met their untimely death will still be waxing strong.

Dora Akunyili stands incorruptible in spite of very tempting offers. In the pursuit of the lofty ideal of ridding the country of the burden of fake drugs, she had dared the conscienceless at the peril of her life.

For giving us hope in a seeming hopeless situation, we believe that this woman is too precious to be allowed to be killed by enemies of the nation. Their devilish ploy must be halted.

When men in public office with less security requirement are being securedly fortified, we see no reason why Dora Akunyili should not be provided, even without asking, with enough security. Dora Akunyili must continue to live because she is a pride to womanhood, her family, Nigeria and the entire Africa. Her rising profile as an effective bastion in the fight against fake drugs in the nation is daunting. In this crusade, Dora Akunyili is a round peg in a round hole.

Apart from beefing up security around her and maintaining a 24-hour vigil on her, we call for the questioning of all known fake drugs dealers that have been querried or sanctioned by NAFDAC in the past. An undertaking by these men that nothing evil will happen to Dora Akunyili is necessary.

The government should be prompt and responsive in giving Dora Akunyili the required security protection that will sustain her steely courage and interest in this anti-fake drug fight she has successfully waged since her appointment as the Director-General of NAFDAC.
